iTunes Review

Moving beyond mere angst and anguish, this Southern California quintet turn their sophomore album into a compelling exploration of faith, suffering, and acceptance. Lead singer Joel Quartuccio’s formidable presence finds a welcome complement in the clean vocals of newly recruited guitarist/singer Michael McGough. The two of them keep the music teetering between tragedy and triumph, underscoring the spiritual struggles at the album's heart. Perish is a work of stark, often violent contrasts, heard in the dynamic shifts and seething textures of “Death’s Great Black Wing Scrapes the Air,” “We Drag the Dead on Leashes,” and similar tracks. “L’exquisite Douleur” is particularly arresting in its explosive drumwork and eerily distant gang vocals. As before, Quartuccio’s manic bellows and commanding spoken-word interludes bring a depth of humanity to BAAO that goes beyond typical post-hardcore releases. On “Mothers,” he confronts the painful last days of a parent with an unflinching honesty that’s ultimately heroic. The austere, electronica-tinged beauty of “Natures” brings the album to a close, reaffirming its message of hard-won redemption.

Pure beauty.

I strongly suggest listening to this album with headphones , straight through, no distractions, because this is a true a gem. I was skeptical on whether or not they could top "Dear G-d", and I say with 100% guarantee, HWBWP is a perfect balance of musicianship and poetry. It definitely exceeds it's predecessor. Each songs instrumental & vocal work has a unique vibe & essence to it that somehow perfectly goes hand-in-hand with the lyrics/message Joel the frontman brings. All in all this is a wonderful and genuinely sincere album dedicated to the principles Love, Hope, Pain, Faith, Humbleness & Forgiveness.

Well done Being As an Ocean.

2 songs and I'm hooked.

Joel and the rest of the band are blowing my mind. They are all so talented. This is gonna be an amazing album.

Formed in 2011, Being as an Ocean are a post-hardcore band with a melodic and plaintive sound punctuated by outbursts of aggression. Based out of Alpine, California, the band, initially made up of singer Joel Quartuccio, guitarists Tyler Ross and Jacob Prest, bassist Ralph Sica, and drummer Shad Hamawe, developed a sound that merged a drifting, melodic hardcore with Quartuccio's harsh vocals, creating an interesting dynamic between the singer and the rest of the band. They debuted their sound on...
