Editors’ Notes

1987’s How Ya Like Me Now marks the pinnacle of Kool Moe Dee’s power. While “Wild Wild West” and its memorable video cemented his status as a pop icon of the '80s, the title track made him a hip-hop legend. Set to a James Brown sample, the song is an efficient takedown of Moe Dee’s younger competitor and alleged imitator, LL Cool J. Moe Dee eventually lost out to LL’s enormous fame, but “50 Ways,” “I’m a Player,” and “Suckers” prove that he gave New York some of its fiercest rap songs in the pivotal year of 1987.
