Editors’ Notes

Maybe it was the incessant comparisons to the Jesus & Mary Chain and then again, perhaps the reason why Howl is a dramatic departure from their previous albums is simply because, like many musicians entering their 30s, they discovered the golden roots of rock ‘n’ roll. Howl is deeply steeped in country, blues and black American spiritual music, starting with the gospel-inspired a cappella crooning on “Shuffle Your Feet.” This acoustic opener is trimmed with tambourines, handclaps, harmonica which all culminates to play like the Brian Jonestown Massacre taking Spiritualized’s Jason Pierce to a Sunday morning Baptist mass. The similarly rootsy “Devil’s Waitin’” makes sense of the T-Bone Burnett credit in the liner notes, while songs like “Complicated Situation” and “Weight of the World” return the band to their penchant for gripping narrative tension.

Customer Reviews

The Ultimate Road Music

Listening to BRMC is like a road trip across the white light of hot desert and the peril of dark, unfamiliar roads. One can almost see the dotted yellow line winding and darting as you listen to this incredible landscape of sound. Driving rhythms and arching lyrics make one want to see the world and listen to BRMC all the while.

One of the greatest albums

This is surely one of the greatest albums ever released. Who would have thought that a band like BRMC, with their over-distorted guitar drone could crank out such a wonderful piece of music. Don't get me wrong, i love the Jesus and Mary Chain sound they carried with the first two albums but Howl was such a wonderful surprise.

Refreshing and honest

How this album has no reviews is a tragedy. This young band has, dare I say it a Beatles like quality and adaptability real maturity and soul wisdom here.

The seed that became Black Rebel Motorcycle Club — or BRMC for short — was planted in 1995, when Robert Levon Been (aka Robert Turner) and Peter Hayes met while attending high school in San Francisco. The two formed a solid friendship and a shared camaraderie based on a mutual love of early-'90s U.K. bands like Ride, the Stone Roses, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and My Bloody Valentine. Despite such similar tastes, both joined different bands — Hayes spent time in the Brian Jonestown...
