Album Review

Dif Juz were one of the most overlooked members of the early 4AD roster, but traces of the unit's beautiful instrumental passages have popped up decades after their dissolution — in wildly varied bands like the Dirty Three and Piano Magic, just to name a couple examples. And, if this material had been originally issued in the mid-to-late '90s, it would have been labelled post-rock. Soundpool combines the Vibrating Air and Huremics EPs, tacking on "No Motion," their excellent contribution to the Lonely is an Eyesore compilation. This disc captures a band that was more deeply rhythmic than the one heard on 1985's Extractions album, as the thick basslines take center stage throughout. Those who find the dubscapes of Public Image Limited's Metal Box a bit too bloodcurdling might find solace in these pleasant, less abrasive songs. This 1999 compilation renders Out of the Trees obsolete.

Customer Reviews

Well it's about time...

Dif Juz was certainly under-rated, but their gorgeous guitar instrumentals are not to be missed. Soarn, Gunet, and of course No Motion are some high points. Kudos to iTunes for *finally* getting the full Soundpool album on here.

Dif Juz

One of the most inlfluential bands from 4AD. Amazing, gorgeous. Bass, drums, and Guitar soundscapes and compositions!! Truly takes you far far and away! To thinks all recorded between 81-85 just incredible! If your a Dj and play art shows or ecclectic parties this is one to add to your arsenal!!

Really good and underrated band

. . . but it doesn't render Out of the Trees obsolete if you own that on vinyl and therefore not only have it on vinyl but have a way better (and way more 4ad) cover to match. Otherwise it's the same plus No Motion - if you like the Cocteau Twins you'd be sorry to pass this up.

Formed: 1980 in England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s

Early proponents of what only later became the 4AD sound, Dif Juz concentrated on just that, lacking a vocalist on all their recordings except for a guest spot or two by the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser. Originally formed as the punk band London Pride by brothers Dave and Alan Curtis, the band included bassist Gary Bromley and drummer Richie Thomas by the release of two EPs for 4AD Records in 1981, Huremics and Vibrating Air. Both works contained textured instrumentals with a wispy, barely there feel...
