EDITORS’ NOTES

New Yorkers Julia Cumming, Jacob Faber, and Nick Kivlen conjure up a far-out swirl of psychedelic wonderment and freewheeling riffs on a debut beaming with easy confidence. For an album valourizing so many genres, however, there’s no spirit of diluted imitation. Human Ceremony fizzes with invention, from “Wall Watchers”’ fuzzy rock crunch to the sublime, sail-away soul of “I Want You to Give Me Enough Time.” Elsewhere on an endlessly inventive set there’s hypnotic dream pop (“Easier Said,” “Creation Myth”) and irresistibly melodic freak-outs (“This Kind of Feeling,” “I Was Home”).

They're AWESOME!!!!!

Everything about this band is incredible. Best new rock band in years and I'm not just saying that because Nick, the guitarist, is my second cousin. THEY ROCK!!!

Pretty solid debut

Interested to see where they grow into. Saw them on the "independent film awards" and they were very good. Sonically, I like "creation myth" and "I want you to give me enough time", "human ceremony" and "easier said". Reminiscent of the guitar work on old Cure, Romeo Void, Fixx, and The Ocean Blue. This music will definitely grow on you. They are a great band and especially engaging at live shows!

This group was reviewed in WSJ and given a strong review. Their music is dreadful, noisy--in short, bad. How groups like this pretend they are makng music when all they do is make racket is beyond my understanding. I'd suggst the band members find a new ocupation.

WSJ reviewer Jim Fusilli--are you nuts?

About Sunflower Bean

Marked by two vocalists who often take turns within a song, Sunflower Bean is an indie pop trio out of Brooklyn. Formed in August 2013 with singer/guitarist Nick Kivlen, singer/bassist Julia Cumming, and drummer Jacob Faber -- all teenagers at the time -- they quickly earned attention for their alternately rock-edged and dreamy guitar tunes, and were invited to open on tours for the likes of DIIV and the Vaccines beginning shortly after their first EP, Show Me Your Seven Secrets, arrived in October 2015. Produced by Matthew Molnar, formerly of indie pop group Friends, Sunflower Bean's debut LP, Human Ceremony, was issued by Fat Possum in early 2016. By December the same year, they had begun work on their follow-up. Whereas their debut featured tracks they had been writing since the band's formation, the material on their sophomore record was written over a 12-month period. The resulting album, Twentytwo in Blue, saw release in early 2018. ~ Marcy Donelson
