great!

So what if they sound a little like coldplay? I think they're great! I especially like "quiet in my town" and "letters from the sky".....Their sound is soothing and unique.

Absolutely flawless debut by the next huge band!

I rarely say a band is destined to be huge but I got that feeling the moment I heard Civil Twilight live 2 years ago. Their debut CD is a masterpiece! Songs like "Letters From The Sky"and "Human" are some of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever created and will stick with you long after the music stops playing. The mix of Steven McKellar's gorgeous words, vocals and piano playing, Andrew McKellar's powerful guitars and Richard Wouters amazing drumming skills makes for quite an unbelievable sound for a trio. They do an amazing job mixing mellower songs like "Stolen," "Quite In My Town" and my favorite "Perfect Stranger" w/more upbeat songs like "Trouble" and "Soldier." Their new track "Save Yourself" is quite Beatles-esque and is one of their best and proves they will be making great music for years to come. There just isn't a weak song on this CD and live they are even better. So make sure to buy this CD and see them live. Because you will be hearing and witnessing the next big thing much like those who saw bands like U2, Radiohead and Coldplay early on can say. Two thumbs way up for this flawless CD and the band in general.

What are you doing reading this / buy this record

Civil Twilight’s song writing (every member of the band contributes to the process) and live performances ooze the essence of a band that has four gold records behind them and one that has played to millions of disciples. It’s difficult for me to comprehend that this band is only now releasing their debut album.

Steven Mckellar (vocals, bass, piano) Andrew McKellar (guitar) along with Richard Wouters (drums) comprise the engine that drives the Civil Twilight machine and oh what a machine it is.

Steven will not be able to avoid the inevitable comparisons to the likes of artists such as Bono; however buying into this parallel would not only be selling him grotesquely short as musician (as he’s a more than accomplished bass and piano player) but as a songwriter and front man as well. Steven’s haunting yet polarizing vocals not only bind Civil Twilight’s music, they serve to transform mere songs into stories that take the listener on journeys from which they don’t want to return. If I were Bono I ‘d probably be worried about industry insiders comparing me to Steven Mckellar.

Too many of modern rock’s current class of “guitar heroes” seem to have skipped creativity and musicianship en route to their rock star graduations. Andrew Mckellar (lead guitarist and brother of lead singer Steven) definitely got “A’s” in these classes while honing his craft.

Andrew infuses Civil Twilight’s music with guitar that elevates the listener to glorious crescendos one moment and tranquil and comforting nadirs the next. The Edge brought a unique style of guitar to the rock world in the 80s and 90s that helped define and make U2s early music timeless. Andrew Mckellar is cut from this same cloth and is poised to leave his own indelible mark on the music industry for years to come.

Far too often today’s rock drummer is but a mere afterthought. He’s the guy that is out of focus in the band’s promotional materials and the last one any would be groupie would flock to once the show is over. Dismissing Civil Twilight’s man behind the kit, Richard Wouters, as a mere spare part would be a grave miscalculation. Richard’s playing style is nothing short of electric. His technical acumen combined with his distinctively characteristic approach to the drums is nothing short of refreshing.

I brought a friend to Civil Twilight’s show held in Providence, Rhode Island recently. My friend’s music collection consists primarily of top 40 and Latin dance music. As the last note emanated from the stage I asked my friend what she thought and she responded, “I feel connected to them”. At the end of day isn’t that why all of us seek out great music, for that connection? And isn’t that connection what’s missing from the vast majority of music today?

Buy Civil Twilight’s music, see them live and get connected. I assure you, you will not be disappointed.

Biography

Formed: 1996 in Cape Town, South Africa

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Originally hailing from Cape Town, Africa, Civil Twilight is an alt-rock outfit that draws parallels to Muse, Pilot Speed, and other like-minded bands with impassioned vocals and stirring, alt-rock songcraft. Brothers Andrew and Steven McKeller were raised in a musical household, having explored their father's jazz collection at a young age while listening to their classically trained mother play piano. In November 1996, Andrew launched a teenaged band with help from his high school classmate, guitarist...
