iTunes Review

Veteran hard rockers Chevelle recorded again with producer Joe Barresi, who worked magic on 2011’s Hats Off to the Bull and has helped prog-metal groups like Tool and Coheed and Cambria define their sounds. Together, they've made one of the strongest albums of Chevelle's career. Frontman Pete Loeffler puts his love of horror movies (Rosemary’s Baby, The Walking Dead) into his approach; the album title translates from Spanish as "The Gargoyle." This, along with Loeffler's fascination with strange guitar stomp boxes, results in songs and guitar tones that sound as hungry and weird as ever. A tune like “Jawbreaker” brings out the best in the band, with a mix of dry vocals and layered guitar tracks. The opening guitar lines of “One Ocean” show a hint of psychedelia that’s kept tight by Dean Bernardini’s solid, melodic bass and drummer Sam Loeffler’s no-nonsense playing. This leads into a tune that’s subdued and sublime, with some of Pete Loeffler’s best vocals. This ability to expand their approach without losing their voice is what’s likely to keep Chevelle going long after their competition call it quits.

Another Masterpiece...

Chevelle is one band, that over the years, have always stayed true to their sound and style, as well as to their fans, and delivered masterpiece after masterpiece. And from the sound of the first single here, this album is gonna be no exception. If this is just a taste of whats to come, then Chevelle is about to lay another rockin masterpiece upon us as they always do.

If you are a Chevelle fan, clicking "buy" is a no brainer...if you are new to Chevelle, you will not be disappointed. In fact, after hearing this, you will most likely be looking for their previous works. So buy and enjoy.

Chevelle delivers again!

Now I've been jamming Chevelle since the very beginning, and while there is nothing here I would call terribly revolutionary by their standards, this band has a formula and know their fans want and deliver album after album. Face-melting riffage...check. Thought-provoking lyrics...check. Fantastic melodies check.

I would technically give this album 4 and 1/2 stars. There are just a few minor things that detracted from the album in my view. I thought the first half of the album was stronger musically than the second half of the album, and I thought the initial introduction riff in 'Under the Knife', though heavy no doubt, was pretty bland and lacking innovation since this is Chevelle we are talking about. Overall, they stayed true to what they do, so if you have and enjoy their previous work, then you will no doubt enjoy this album.

After listening to the live stream of this album it’s what a Chevelle fan could hope for. Although I’m a big Chevelle fan I tend to gravitate to their “harder” material. Some of my all time favorites “Grab Thy Hand”, “Another Know it All”, “Vitamin R" and “Get Some.” There are several tracks on this album that are reminiscent of those. I was not a big fan of the sound of the Vena Sera in fact I despised it, the only Chevelle album I could not listen to from start to finish. The past two album releases (Sci-Fi Crimes, Hats off to the Bull) were solid but still left me desiring something greater. La Gargola nailed it! Its aggressive and hard with a few superb mellow tracks to balance it out. Something for every Chevelle fan. Pre-Ordered! BTW I’m a Tool fan as well and I don’t consider Chevelle a Tool knock-off.

Formed: 1995 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Inspired by the lurching riffs of Helmet and the soft-loud vocal dynamics of Tool, Chicago-based trio Chevelle formed in 1995 with an aggressive, heavy sound. Comprising brothers Sam (drums), Pete (vocals, guitar), and Joe Loeffler (bass), the band began playing parties and outdoor events, which quickly led to bookings at Chicago clubs when youngest member Joe was just 14 years old. In 1999, Chevelle released their Steve Albini-produced debut album, Point #1, on Squint Entertainment. Three years...
