EDITORS’ NOTES

Andrea Tomasi and producer Jeremy Backofen were scheduled to record this album at a New York studio when Hurricane Irene forced a change of plans. Moving to an outdoor setting in nearby Minnewaska State Park, they captured the sounds of nature as a backdrop to the singer/songwriter’s delicate, mystically tinged music. Crickets chirp and tree branches rustle as Tomasi sings of simple comforts, thwarted love, and the transcendent call of the land with an enraptured air. Influenced by the work of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, she vividly portrays an unspoiled world in tunes like “Birdflower,” “Fallow Field,” and “Honey Bee.” Echoes of early Judy Collins and Sandy Denny (as well as contemporary artists like Joanna Newsom) can be heard in the traditional folk-rooted melodies and shifting emotions of “West Virginia," “He Waits,” and “Hurricane Dream.” Tracks like the buoyant “Falcon” add energy. Tomasi’s fluent acoustic guitar work provides fine accompaniment to her sweet, vibrato-tinged vocals. It all combines to make this album as refreshing as a walk through a deep, mystery-shrouded forest.
