Editors’ Notes

Though recorded in September 1992, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (“if the light takes us” in Norwegian) wasn’t released until April 1994. At that time, Count Grishnackh (a.k.a. Varg Vikernes, the sole member of Burzum) was incarcerated and awaiting sentencing for charges of arson and murder. This album would be the last one released before he started a 17-year prison sentence. His primeval vocals here could be taken as screams of freedom or screams of anguish, but there's no question that this is music of catharsis. With its billowing synths and blurred drumming, “Det Som En Gang Var” (“What Once Was”) seeks to alter the parameters of heavy metal by putting listeners in touch with forces far beyond the conventions of popular music. Though Varg and Burzum would soon be synonymous with metal’s most evil aspects, there's an element of beauty and elegance on Hvis Lyset Tar Oss that makes its darkness even more potent. The delicacy and introspection of Varg’s vision comes out on the closing song, “Tomhet” (“Emptiness”), which uses nothing but fragile melodies on a synthesizer.

Simply the Best

There really is no black metal album better than this one. Hopefully it's presence on iTunes means that a proper CD reissue is coming up soon.

One of the best

ever written black metal albums. Phenomenal ambient black metal from the screwy mind of Kristian Vikernes (yes, thats his real name.) 3 songs of raw, repetitive, drony black metal, and an excellent ambient closing. Enjoy this album and expect greatness only "If the Light Will Take Us"

A true black metal classic...

This is one of the greatest black metal releases of all time. It is the album that got me into black metal in the first place. If you are a metal fan, and you don't own this album, GET IT NOW! Or better yet, get the vinyl re-release (I did, and couldn't be happier). Anyway, Det Som en Gang Var is one of the best black metal songs ever written; the best adjective I can come up with for it is epic. One of my favorite riffs of all time! The next 2 songs, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Inn I Slottet Fra Droemmen are solid, and some of Varg's most solid and well-polished tracks. Plus, Tomhet is probalby the best ambient track that Varg ever made, until Der Tod Woutans off of Hliðskjálf. If you only get one Burzum album, make this the one.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Burzum is the one-man project of Varg Vikernes (born Christian Vikernes, aka Count Grishnackh), perhaps the most notorious figure in Norwegian black metal. Although Burzum had an unpredictably experimental bent — encompassing black metal, industrial, electronic, and dark ambient music — Vikernes will forever be associated with his conviction for the 1993 murder of former Mayhem bandmate Euronymous. It wasn't the first time Vikernes had run afoul of the law; he had been a suspect in arsons...
