Editors’ Notes

There's nobody in the band named Jeff; the Nashville-based garage rock duo JEFF the Brotherhood consists of brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall (formerly of the band Be Your Own Pet). Jake and Jamin are sons of country music hitmaker Robert Ellis Orrall. And even though the first song from 2012’s Hypnotic Nights is titled “Country Life,” it’s actually a confectionary blend of sticky power pop (à la Cheap Trick) and contemporary garage rock in the vein of Jack White or Jay Reatard. Hypnotic Nights is the duo’s first album for a major label, but the production still resonates with bite and grit. Dig the dirty distortion in “Sixpack”—one of the catchiest cuts here—or the vintage guitar fuzz in “Staring at the Wall.” The brothers Orrall are gifted at crafting catchy melodies; they can even pull them out of monotone drone-rockers like “Hypnotic Winter.” They close on a Joseph Byrd analog-manipulated cover of Black Sabbath’s “Changes.” The deluxe version kicks down an awe-inspiring, 11-and-a-half-minute cover of Hawkwind’s “Master of the Universe.”

Customer Reviews

Solid Album

Don't get what all the bad reviews are about, I really enjoy this album. It's a good, chill rock album. I like these guys a lot

A Let down...

Don't get me wrong, I am a HUGE fan of their privious work (Heavy Days, We Are The Champions) but this album is missing something those other albums had. The best way I can describe it is that I can listen to the preivious albums from beginging to end and then want to listen to them AGAIN! I only listen to bits of this one... I look forward to the next one...

Hypnotic Nights is hypnotic fun

Jeff the Brotherhood has been a very obscure band and has released some cool pieces of music. Hypnotic Nights is their first jump to the mainstream it seems maybe. Anyway, this album includes 2 singles: Six-Pack and Leave Me Out. Great songs. My 3 picks off this masterpiece would have to be Leave Me Out, Dark Energy, and Region of Fire. LMO is just a peppy and awesome alternative song. DE is a powerful piece of music that's catchy. ROF is one of the greatest love songs I've heard in awhile. In general, Hypnotic Nights is one of the greatest albums of the 2010's. JTB should continue this way and hopefully have their songs hit the billboard.

Biography

Formed: 2001 in Nashville, TN

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

An actual brotherhood, though not actually containing anyone named Jeff, JEFF the Brotherhood is the brainchild of brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall (who also played in Be Your Own Pet). The sons of successful songwriter Robert Ellis Orrall, the Nashville duo started out in 2001 while they were still in high school. Combining psychedelic rock, garage, and power pop influences, the pair have cultivated an eccentric, driving sound that explores the boundaries of rock & roll without forgetting the...
