iTunes Review

System of a Down’s fifth album is incisively nuanced, with chunky overdriven hooks and groovy percussion breakdowns. Their thrashy tendencies are balanced by singer Serj Tankian’s dramatic melodies, and a knack for dynamics means they sometimes trade fury for subtlety, making the best tracks both stunning and pummeling.

POP!?

Excuse me, this is not pop. Pop is defined as anything that pretends to be, but is not, music. This is in fact music, and good music at that. Metal ≠ Pop. No dice. Lern sum dikshunarys. That being said, buy it.

This is a great album. Not quite as good as Mesmerize though, it's a bit harsher. 1. Attack: A fast-paced song. It's kinda weird and not as artistic. 7/10 2. Dreaming: Pretty good music. 9/10 3. Kill Rock 'n Roll: This is the best song on the album. The intro is awesome, it almost makes me cry. 10/10 4. Hypnotize: Most mainstream. It's not their best. 8/10 5. Stealing Society. Intro leaves a bit desired, but when the lyrics go in, it's great. 8/10 6. Tentative: It's okay. 7/10 7. U-fig: I don't really like this one. 5/10 8 Holy mountains: Pretty good. It's like aerials, a bit more fast-paced in the bridge. 9/10 9. Vicinity of Obscenity: Good music. Lyrics are a bit nonsensical. 9/10 10. She's Like Heroin: Almost as good as Vicinity of Obscenity. It's really musical. 8/10 11. Lonely Day: Best mainstream song. It's very sad, and it has an awesome solo. 10/10 12. Soldier Side: Great beat, and very emotional. I love it. 9/10

I AM POSITIVE SO DONT LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO SAY ARE BREAKING UP. Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Like many late-'90s metal bands, System of a Down struck a balance between '80s underground thrash metal and metallic early-'90s alternative rockers like Jane's Addiction. Their dark, neo-gothic alternative metal earned a cult following in the wake of the popularity of such like-minded bands as Korn and the Deftones. Vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan formed System of a Down in Southern California in the mid-'90s. They quickly earned...
