Album Review

Joe Poonanny's a throwback, a modern day purveyor of the raunchy, bawdy recordings of the '40s and '50s that stereotyped R&B for years. "The Devil's music," as some elders called it, changed by the late '50s when R&B cleaned its image and began selling to the masses. "3 People Sleepin' In My Bed" and "Trashy Women" are the tamest selections; others, however, describe love and sex so descriptively they can only be played when kids aren't present. The titles, including "Meatman," "Out Grindin' The Grindin' Man," "Beat Your Meat," "I Ain't Beggin', I'm Buyin'," and "Rump Ringer," say it all. Producer Tommy Couch gets great performances from all involved. This is first-class party music; an excellent ice breaker for gatherings.

He drummed around for years but wanted something more substantial, so in 1975 he worked behind the scenes operating night clubs and managing...
