Album Review

These Boston yobs may have taken a nod or two from Norma Jean and Underoath, but this brand of gritty, dirty, nasty melodic crank and crush is their own. Signed by Epitaph shortly after they formed — and already undergoing a personnel change with a new lead vocalist — they know how to get it done. The melodic call and response verses that alternate between Chris' emocore pleading and growled black metallic Cookie Monster vocals are interesting — they'd do better to lose the latter because Chris can carry that with his given voice. Nick Lambert's guitars are a huge part of the appeal. He's not just riffing — though there's plenty of that — but he plays these really winding, tight lines inside the verses of most songs — "That Champagne Feeling" is a good example, as is "I Am the Wind, You Are the Feather." The album could have lived without the last cut, which shall go unnamed here, but Vanna shows real promise. Epitaph's track record for finding bands that mature is impeccable.

Catchy as Phuck!

I have friends that once hung out with members of Vanna way back when. Both this album, and Curses are great efforts, although I do prefer this one. Catchy hooks that get stuck in your head for days. Case in point: I have Dead Language for a Dying Lady stuck in my head right now! Great musicianship that will keep you coming back for more. Do yourself a favor and check Vanna out if you've never heard of them. You won't be disappointed!

this band is ill

Yes, boston does have the greatest scene with Vanna, FYS and Therefore I Am. Buy this cd before you buy Curses or A New Hope which comes out soon because this is their best album by far

Taking influence from bands like As I Lay Dying, Norma Jean, and Every Time I Die, Boston metalcore outfit Vanna were barely together a year before signing with Epitaph Records in fall 2005. Comprising Joe Bragel (vocals), Nick Lambert (guitar/vocals), Evan Pharmakis (guitar/vocals), Brandon Davis (drums), and Shawn Marquis (bass), their music often alternated between melodic singing and visceral growling. The band parted ways with Bragel for personal reasons in February 2006, and a new vocalist,...
