Not as good as I expected.

I'm a Michael fan from back in the 90's and when I saw that Midnight Cry had been downloaded so many times, I just knew it would be great. Unfortunately I think Michael missed this one. He just sang it as if his dog just died. The real story behind the song is of Joy! and expectation about Jesus' return and lifting us up from the evil around us. I had just hoped for him to sing the song in a tune more suited to the nature of the story it is telling. Michael's vocals are as good as ever, but he messed this song up for me. Sorry.

Gospel - English Style

Michael goes back to his southern roots with Gospel. He sings in a blues-style fashion on Blessed Assurance - a fun song to listen to and sing along with. Stand-outs for me are Midnight Cry, Had It Not Been, I Bowed On My Knees and Cried Holy, and I Surrender All. I still get chills when I hear him sing I Bowed On My Knees - the ending always gets me.

Not what I was looking for... again!!

This is so frustrating! These clips show Michael English was in great voice, as usual, when he made this album, but this collection does not include the song I've been looking for. Sometime in the late 80s, Michael did a rendition of Midnight Cry backed by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir (possibly recorded live) that just took my breath away. Honestly, it was quite literally spine-tingling to hear it. I used to have it on cassette, but that's long gone since I pretty much played it to death years ago. What really kills me is that iTunes might actually have the track I want on some compilation here, but they don't usually list individual artists on compilations, so I have no way of finding it. Entering Michael's name or the song title in the search turns up nothing as far as this particular performance. All I know is, I've searched everywhere online, but the version of Midnight Cry I'm looking for doesn't seem to be available anymore. And that's a shame, because it's so worth having. Oh well!
