Editors’ Notes

Blue Clear Sky is one of the defining country albums of the 1990s, and one of the strongest song collections of George Strait’s career. At a time when country songs were being forced into one of two corners — pop or traditional — Strait showed that it was possible to combine the two without sacrificing the careful attention to songcraft that has always been at the heart of country music. The album’s centerpiece is “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” (written by Aaron Barker and Erv Woolsey), a master class in narrative songwriting. The song traces a phone call between a worn-out rodeo cowboy and his wife, and Strait sings it with the utmost sensitivity, emphasizing the emotion in exactly the right places, turning a five-stanza ballad into something with the scope of a novel. Such is the man’s art. Where most country singers sell their songs with punchlines, big hooks, and overblown sentiment, Strait is all about the substance. Every song on Blue Clear Sky illustrates a specific scene or feeling, and by the album’s end the listener feels that this isn’t only a sequence of great country songs, but a collection of short stories.

Blue Clear George

Can you take a great country voice and mix it with some of the best county lyrics and music and compile it to one great album? If you are George Strait, you can time and time again. This was done with with style when Blue Clear Sky was recorded in 1996. From the first chord of the cover title song to the last note in "Need I Say More", Strait nails it. And, what a beautiful song that will play over in your mind over and over again is "I Can Still Make Cheyenne", a wonderfully written and performed country ballad. On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, I give it 5 stars that you can see in the Blue Clear Sky!

Carried Away

I love this song. It says so much about how you care for someone. Really touching song. George Strait is the best! :)

Blue Clear Sky

I saw George Strait in concert at Freedom Hall. It was one of the greatest concerts I've been to. It seems like this man can never manage to write a bad song. He truely is one of a kind.

Out of all the country singers to emerge in the 1980s, George Strait stayed the closest to traditional country. Drawing from both the honky tonk and Western swing traditions, Strait didn't refashion the genres; instead, he revitalized them. In the process, he became one of the most popular and influential singers of the era, sparking a wave of neo-traditionalist singers from Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakam to Clint Black, Garth Brooks, and Alan Jackson. Strait was born and raised in Texas, the son...
