The Ultimate Jazz Collection #26 - Lester Young

I'm not the most knowledgeable jazz buff on the planet. I suppose that makes me a jazz dilettante...whatever. Still, I think I can hear greatness, and, insofar as that's true, I hear it on this collection. Coming up in the '50's and '60's, as I did, the name Lester Young was not one my friends and I often mentioned. Charlie Parker, yes. Cannonball Adderly, yes. Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond, yes. Lester Young? Wasn't he one of those old swing jazz cats? Well, yes, he was, but take a listen to the tunes on UJC #26 and see if you don't agree that all of the players everyone was talking about back in the day, didn't owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to this amazingly creative and expressive artist. And, at $9.95 for 55 (count them, 55) cuts, or about 20 cents a song, The Ultimate Jazz Collection #26 - Lester Young, is one of the most formidable bargains iTunes has to offer.
