Album Review

In an era when many artists are banking on and dedicated to cool nostalgic influences like Joy Division and peak-era Depeche Mode, Hot Mute take an interesting, divergent path. Their self-titled and self-released debut is a spot-on throwback to the glory days of their power pop influences Cheap Trick, the Cars, ELO, Queen, and Supertramp. Throw in a little Mott the Hoople and David Bowie for good measure. And while many bands going the nostalgia route add modern touches, Hot Mute sounds completely authentic, almost as if they've time-traveled back to mine the wonderfully tacky syrup in which they revel. Throughout the album, they go back and forth between their influences, often sounding like dead-ringers musically. The only difference is Gary Russell Wertz's voice. Wertz has a rich voice and holds his own quite well compared to his idols, offering up restrained yet emotional performances. At times the album sounds like a less artsy version of Shudder to Think, and that's to be taken as a compliment. So many bands come off like poseurs treading this sort of ground, but Hot Mute get things right. While they haven't bested their influences by any means, one can almost consider the album a sort of best-of the B-sides kind of deal. It's a deal worth making.

Customer Reviews

This is my uncles band and it is a pretty solid piece of work. BRUCE ROCK ON MAN!!! I've shown the album to some of my friends and even though it isn't the hyper speed of bands like fall out boy, it proved to stand out as a true 80s rhythm throwback. Fun for all with some great guitar in She's the medecine, Hot Mute is a great addition to my collection. My only question would be whatever happened to My Machine and She Drives a Car. Those were some of my favorites.
