Great album

Awesome! Charlatans UK have always been great.

Give us it.

Wow. No love for this album? A world on iTunes and nothing. If you are a lover of brit pop and imbibe all things shoegaze / sixties / strummy / pop mersey sounds...then I say give this a shot. This album is not an easy first listen. I hate "critics" who review an album pretty much as fast as they post the critique. Like they listen to it as they are writing it. Love develops with time. Rarely does it happen upon meeting. With this, another Charlatans album, complete with tight song writing and arrangements goes unnoticed here in the states. Sure, Tellin' Stories was a little hit & miss, but this is definitely a step in the right direction. First off, "Us & Us Only" has (from my opinion) hands down their single best track to date. "Impossible" is my absolute favorite Charlies track of all time. The strummy strum. Tim's endearing voice. The piano vibe and best of all...the harmonica at the end. Amazing. That track alone speaks volumes to where they can go sonically if they choose to. Other notable tracks is the glacial torch down of "Forever" when Ride imbibed the Who, this track takes it's time to get to the meat and potatoes. The signature hammond is ever present in this darkly sinister track. "The Blonde Waltz" and "The Blind Stagger" are both strummy gems with teeth that would be stand-outs on lesser bands albums. But, for the pick pickys out there who take the Charlies for granted...these songs fall into the background. There is a definite Americana feel to most of these tracks, bridged by the signature sounds the Charlies are most known for. The shuffle beat, hammond organ and Tim's unique vocal deliveries. This creates a new dynamic in their sonic repertoire. It's a successful marriage of sound. This album sits next to their self-titled album as my two favorites. The Charlatans rarely make a bad album. Each release always contains a gem or two...or three. This one has several. Discover them for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Formed: 1989 in Manchester, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

For many years, the Charlatans UK were perceived as the also-rans of Madchester, the group that didn't capture the Zeitgeist like the Stone Roses or the band that failed to match the mad genre-bending of the Happy Mondays. Of course, they were more traditional than either of their peers. Working from a Stonesy foundation, the Charlatans added dance-oriented rhythms and layers of swirling organs straight out of '60s psychedelia. At first, the Charlatans had great promise, and their initial singles...
