iTunes Review

Californian singer-songwriter Jackie Greene has quietly been amassing a deep, rewarding collection of tunes that reflect the enthusiasms of a young inquisitive songwriter with strong roots in folk, blues, country and classic American heartland rock. While Greene is that rare performer who can captivate a room with just his voice and guitar, he opts to cloak his sound in dense layers of guitars and keyboards, occasionally blunting the potential impact in the process. 2008’s Giving Up the Ghost, co-produced with Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin, has several standout moments. The moody, wistful “Shaken” rasps like a lost Johnny Thunders ballad. “Animal” creeps with a dimly-lit noir backing of spare guitars and swelling organs. The quiet simmer of “I Don’t Live in a Dream“ brings Greene’s authoritative vocals to the frontline. “Downhearted” and “When You Return,” while featuring his strong, distinctive delivery, are muted by his backing group’s sturdy but too safe arrangements. When Greene breaks past for the bluesy wail of “Ghosts of Promised Lands,” his band surges behind him towards a climactic peak.

Jackie's new CD is chocked full of great songs!!...This is a real album, an artistic, sonic, masterpiece. 'SHAKEN', 'LIKE A BALL & CHAIN', 'UPHILL MOUNTAIN' and 'DON'T LET THE DEVIL TAKE YOUR HAND' are highlights. Jackie has delivered a career record...DON'T MISS IT!!

This is the kind of music iTunes should be featuring on its artist of the week. Terrific sounding album.c

Incredible talent! Incredible Album!

If you are reading this review to determine if you should buy this recording, don't think twice: Buy it! Jackie is one of the most talented people on the planet. Kudos to Phil Lesh and Steve Berlin for bringing Jackie to the attention of the world. The energy level he generates for a studio recording is a feat that few performers achieve. This recording is a testament to both his songwriting and performance talent. Now that he is traveling and performing non-stop, we are blessed that he found the time to write more songs and get to a recording studio. Song writing is unique, but is in a class with Robert Hunter, Hank Williams and yes, Bob Dylan. I saw Jackie with Phil Lesh four times in 2007. The November 5, 2007 Nokia NYC performance with Phil and Friends, Steve Berlin and Ryan Adams is forever etched in my mind as a concert for the ages. Jackie, keep on writing! Not to be greedy, but I'm already looking forward to your next album.

Discovered at an open-mike night when Dig Music's owner happened to be there, singer/songwriter Jackie Greene is a captivating performer who works well in simple, sparse environments. Signing to the label almost immediately, the California native worked countless clubs and bars before his discovery, a fact made more interesting when considering that he was a teenager at the time. A multi-instrumentalist, Greene played most of the instruments on his debut record, Gone Wanderin'. A soulful bit of roots...
