iTunes Review

This thorough collection shows how almost everything singer/songwriter Elton John touched—or co-wrote with lyricist Bernie Taupin—turned to gold. There are early smashes, including the riff-a-rama barnburner “The Bitch Is Back,” the dance floor-filler “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” (with Kiki Dee), and the melancholic “Levon” (inspired by the co-founder of The Band). Of course, Elton’s hits continued long after the ’70s had ended, as collected here—from lush love song “The One” to the open-armed optimism of “Believe” to the set’s fitting finale, a spare heart-burner about aging, “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore.”

Initially marketed as a singer/songwriter, John soon revealed he could craft Beatlesque pop and pound out rockers...
