Recently saw a performance of I due Foscari at LA Opera, with Placido Domingo in the role of the elder Foscari, Francesco, and a thrilling soprano, Marina Poplavskaya, in the role of Lucrezia Contarini. I knew nothing of this work in advance and absolutely fell in love with the gorgeous music. Beautiful duets and delicate, for such a tragic theme. I wanted to download a good recording and while this was recorded in 1977, it is stunning. The young Carreras as Jacopo Foscari is brilliant as are the other cast members. It's too bad this opera is so often overlooked.

Piero Cappuccilli was one of the premier baritones of his generation, most closely associated with the music of Verdi. His wide range, of more than two-and-a-half octaves, and his near-legendary breath control were perfectly suited to even the most demanding roles. While his physical acting was generally limited, he was a fine vocal interpreter who eschewed extra-musical effects in favor of lyrical nuance. Cappuccilli had no interest in music while he was growing up, and it took the combined persuasion...
