SILLY...but FUN !

I remember hearing "Shame Shame Shame" when it first came out in 1975. I was 11 years old, and Shirley & Company performed the song on a short-lived variety show that Bill Cosby had on TV. The song was so nutty, and the group's on-screen performance so silly and off-the-wall, that I didn't even realize it was a real song by a real group. I thought it was another comedy sketch. I got the LP for Christmas that year, and it's been a guilty pleasure ever since. The album was obviously recorded on a low-budget with a no-frills production, and Shirley has a shrill voice which could shatter glass...but I LOVE this album. The music is an eccentric blend of Dr Demento-like novelty songs like "Disco Shirley" and romantic R&B ballads like "Gotta Get Next to You." "Jim Doc Kay" has nursery-rhyme lyrics, while the instrumental version of "Cry Cry Cry" is actually quite lovely. Shirley and her friends were obviously having a lot of fun while making this album, and I've always had fun listening to it. Even the colorful, cartoon album cover matches the festive mood of the music contained within. It's the best Disco album Dr Demento never made...

If I'd Only...

Forgive this slap in the face, as I ultimately know the ridiculasness of it, but if the 70's had internet, Id BEEEEE there now. I know, I myself do not really feel that way of course. This slice of 70's music is just a small piece of the reason I know, I was born in the wrong decade. Ask Cat Stevens, cause here comes his baby!

Shirley & Company's lone hit, "Shame, Shame, Shame," heralded the commercial rebirth of singer Shirley Goodman, launching her among the earliest stars of disco some two decades after her initial success as half of the hugely popular R&B duo Shirley & Lee. Born June 19, 1936, in New Orleans, Goodman first developed her piercing vocal style in her Baptist church choir, additionally harmonizing with friends on area street corners. When she was 13, Goodman joined with several schoolmates...
