Rare Tracks & Mega-Hits

Although marked as a "partial album," this collection provides some rare tracks that haven't been released since their original debut on vinyl. Hardcore Olivia fans will be happy to hear the "mighty fine" country tracks "Every Face Tells A Story," and "Dancin' 'Round and Round." Newly re-released tracks--"Totally Hot," "Fool Country," (music from the "Xanadu" finale originally released as the B-side of the "Magic" single) and "Livin' in Desperate Times" (from John Travolta/ONJ "Two of a Kind" soundtrack)-stand along side her mega-hits-"Physical, "A Little More Love" and "Twist of Fate"--to show the post-"Grease" metamorphosis of Olivia from a sweet and innocent chanteuse to an unabashedly sexual pop/rock/dance diva. A career trajectory since copied by everyone from Sheena Easton to Britney Spears. Other vocal gems include "Soul Kiss," (if you can get past some of the lyrics) "Can We Talk It Over In Bed," "The Rumour," and the lullaby "Reach Out For Me." Last, but not least, is Olivia's late '90's cover of her own #1 1974 hit "I Honestly Love You." Almost 25 years later, her once pure voice has a maturity and earthiness that in turn makes her always-impeccable phrasing even more personal and evocative.

While I am happy to see many of these songs together, I only bought "I Honestly Love You" for a special CD for my wife. BLEH!! This is not the original recording I remember. It's awful! It's been bubble-gum-ized. Yuck. Go find the original!

Solid Gold!

A fantastic collection that spans three whole decades (70s, 80s, 90s) and lives up to it’s name. With mega-hits like “Magic” and “Physical,” it’s almost hard to believe Olivia, the English-born Aussie, started out singing Country music; but she did and it’s all documented here. Even the ‘Grease’ hit “Hopelessly Devoted To You” had a twang to it. The shimmering ‘Xanadu’ singles roll us into the “big 80s” with style. Actually, all of the tracks featured here are fun and sweet. Olivia’s voice remains unique, unmatched and lovely. You very well might find this collection at the end of a rainbow.

Olivia Newton-John skillfully made the transition from popular country-pop singer to popular mainstream soft rock singer, becoming one of the most successful vocalists of the '70s in the process. The transition itself wasn't much of a stretch -- her early-'70s hits "I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow" were country only in the loosest sense -- yet the extent of her success in both fields was remarkable. As a country singer, her first five charting singles all went Top Ten in the...
