Album Review

Containing no less than 25 tracks, Basher: The Best of Nick Lowe is an excellent overview of Lowe's solo career, detailing how he evolved from a quirky, innovative new wave pop craftsman to a fine roots rocker. All of Lowe's absolutely essential songs — from "So It Goes" and "Heart of the City" through "Cracking Up," "Born Fighter," and "Cruel to Be Kind" to "American Squirm," "The Rose of England," "Half a Boy and Half a Man," and "Raging Eyes" — are here, and while Jesus of Cool and Labour of Lust are essential in their own right, Basher is a terrific introduction to his body of work.

Underrated music

Nick Lowe is a fantastic writer and singer. You really can't go wrong with this album.

Urgent: Rediscover this man's work!

There are no bad tracks here. If you are just discovering Lowe's music, just buy this whole collection and start grooving. The man can write and sing like nobody else. Breaking Glass, Cracking Up, Marie Provost, Heart of the City, American Squirm, Raging Eyes...it's all good.

And Where Is: "Switchboard Susan"?

Sometimes itunes makes you wanna scratch your head... They put these 'best of' compilations out and even the most casual listener would see glaring omissions. itunes would be best off coming clean with its customers and explain why it cannot provide (in many cases) some of the artist's best material.

With the Brinsleys, Lowe began a back-to-basics movement that flowered into punk rock in the late '70s. As the house producer for Stiff, he recorded many seminal records by the likes of the Damned, Elvis Costello, and the Pretenders. His rough, ragged production style earned him the nickname "Basher" and also established the amateurish,...
