Editors’ Notes

Having won a Juno Award in 2011 for New Group of the Year, Vancouver’s Said the Whale has been steadily building on its critical reputation by releasing work at a ready clip. 2012’s Little Mountain rode the band's recognition into the Canadian pop charts, and hawaiii follows up with two songs (“I Love You,” “Mother”) from the I Love You EP, as well as 10 new tunes. The pressure to deliver quickly (the band also performs at big festivals and tours regularly) has sharpened its attack. The advantage of having two key singer/songwriters at the top—Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft—is more evident here than ever. “I Love You” is a perfect and infectious pop song where the harmonies and dynamic arrangement bring out the best in the group. “Resolutions” throws Jaycelyn Brown’s keyboards to the front for a touch of placid, atmospheric electro-pop with a decided Pacific Northwest mood. Save the Whale may not be able to spell, but it does everything else right.

After stabilizing the roster, the band quickly got to work on EP projects, two of which would see release as free online downloads. Their first album, Taking Abalonia, was...
