Album Review

This is an Ultimate Collection for the Impressions, not Curtis Mayfield, which are two separate things, no matter how closely intertwined their histories are. This begins with "For Your Precious Love," when Jerry Butler was the lead singer, and ends with two tracks that he neither wrote nor sang, giving a good basic history of the band's career from 1958 to 1975. Not every great Impressions song is here, but nearly ever song here is great (the quality does dip a bit toward the end); this certainly delivers a good summary of — and even introduction to — the group, which was one of the greatest of its time, regardless of genre. That said, it won't give you everything you need — but it certainly will get your love started.

Whats not to like?

I am 13 years old and I listen to this. That should tell you something about it right there. Believe it or not, this is the forerunner to rap music that we have today. My personal favorite is People Get Ready. Great album, great song. 5 stars easily.

Pure Pleasure

To listen to this collection of hits by the late/great Mr. Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions is an honor to those who can appreciate what they contributed to the music industry. You can't claim to be "old school" unless you know these great songs.

The Impressions

I was fortunate enough to grow up on Impressions music thanks to my uncle. Throughout the 60's with all the changes in music, Curtis stayed consistant. His poetry and his cords are unforgettable. You don't have to be a musician or a singer to know that the guy was a genious. I am looking for a song called Moonlight Shadows. I believe its from the album We're a Winner, but I'm not sure. I would love to see it in the Music Store. Desparately-DrSC

The quintessential Chicago soul group, the Impressions' place in R&B history would be secure if they'd done nothing but launch the careers of soul legends Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield. But far more than that, the Impressions recorded some of the most distinctive vocal-group R&B of the '60s under Mayfield's guidance. Their style was marked by airy, feather-light harmonies and Mayfield's influentially sparse guitar work, plus, at times, understated Latin rhythms. If their sound was sweet and lilting,...
