iTunes Review

Best known for his work with various East Coast rappers and Dipset crew members (Jim Jones, Cam'Ron, Vado, Fabolous, Lloyd Banks, etc.), AraabMuzik (a.k.a. Abraham Orellana) has been steadily building his rep as one of New York's go-to guys for beats that combine samples, electronics, and that hard-to-master mix of spaciness and hardcore. Following last year's well-received Electronic Dream, he returns with Instrumental University, this time showcasing rhyme-free versions of many previously released collaborations. Overcoming a major issue that often plagues instrumental albums, the tracks here vary a lot stylistically. He showcases his diverse skillset by dropping thick club bangers ("1,2,3 Grind"), minimalist bloody balladry ("Shady Murder"), and frantic trap anthems ("Rubberband Stacks") with equal aplomb. Ideal as driving music, rap practice sessions, or even moody film soundtracks, these are top-notch productions sure to satisfy the most serious beat fiends. "Blow Ya Smoke," "Ain't Mad Acha," and "Snapped" are especially nice.

The Providence, Rhode Island native, born Abraham Orellana, creates hard-hitting beats swathed in dramatic strings, spiked with repetitive piano and synthesizer vamps, and switches between stripped-down and layered...
