iTunes Review

Louisiana bluesman Tab Benoit cannily evokes his home state on this collection of his greatest swamp-blues numbers. Check out the chugging rhythms of “Muddy Bottom Blues” and the fast and furious “Night Train” to get a grasp of his incredible range. Benoit is a powerful vocalist with a raspy edge, and his guitar playing ranges from choogling boogie to searing solos. Benoit also puts his personal stamp on Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” transforming the country-rock staple into smoky blues.

Unlike so many others before him, Benoit understands that blues is not a medium in favor with 50,000-watt commercial rock radio stations, so as a consequence,...
