Album Review

Due to the straight-ahead nature of the music on this CD, plus trumpeter Arturo Sandoval's self-restraint, I Remember Clifford has been many jazz purists' favorite among the trumpeter's releases. Sandoval, who is joined by pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Charnett Moffett, drummer Kenny Washington, and either Ernie Watts, David Sanchez, or Ed Calle on tenor, pays tribute to the great Clifford Brown by performing ten selections previously recorded by Brown, plus his original "I Left This Space for You." The emphasis is on bebop (no Latin or Cuban rhythms on this date), with the highlights including "Daahoud," "Joy Spring," "Cherokee," and an emotional "I Remember Clifford."

not really latin jazz

I bought this thinking it was along the lines of his others--but its really just straightforward jazz without the latin influence. Its worth ot for the song Cherokee.

Brown: One of the best ever, period...

The tune "I Remember Clifford" in my oppinion is one of the greatest songs ever written. When played it immediately places you in a mood that few songs achieve. Benny G created a masterpiece.

Arturo's the man

Ths album is incredible. Arturo's rendition of Joy Spring is the best version I have ever heard. I recently played Brownie's solo on Joy Spring, and my teacher gave me Arturo's version to help with the solo. I could not stop listening to it. Clifford would be proud.

A blazing, technically flawless trumpeter from Cuba, Arturo Sandoval has been dazzling audiences all over the world with his supercharged tone and bop-flavored flurries way up in the trumpet's highest register. In slower numbers, he sports a golden, mellow tone on the flügelhorn, marked with a sure, subtle sense of swing. Apparently he is capable of playing anything, proving it more than once by tackling classical repertoire as well as jazz in the same concert, and he has enough curiosity to search...
