EDITORS’ NOTES

Portraying one of America’s country legends takes both considerable gumption and serious chops; fortunately Tom Hiddleston, who plays and sings the part of Hank Williams in the biopic I Saw the Light, has both. Instead of trying to duplicate Hank’s sound, Hiddleston taps into the spirit of his recordings, nailing the romantic desperation of “Why Don’t You Love Me” and the lusty insouciance of “Hey Good Lookin’” with just the right amount of edge. Additional tracks by Williams contemporaries such as George Morgan and Eddy Arnold lend perfect period touches.
