Album Review

The Essential Mary Chapin Carpenter takes hits from six albums she recorded for Columbia, omitting material from her first album, Hometown Girl. Since the majority of these songs appealed to both pop and country audiences, they achieved wide crossover popularity. The 16 cuts include the original versions of Carpenter's Top Ten hits "I Feel Lucky," "Passionate Kisses," "Down at the Twist and Shout," "Quittin' Time," and her first number one hit, "He Thinks He'll Keep Her." While the majority of these tracks are also included on Party Doll and Other Favorites, the difference is Essential contains the radio versions, not alternate takes or live tracks. Both discs are recommended to fans of Carpenter's modern folk/country hybrid.

Get this one, not Party Doll

11 of the songs here are on Party Doll. There'salso a few non radio hits on here as well but are just amazing songs. Party Doll has some live versions of someof the songs here but I perfer the versoins that made them hits (thought I'd love to get a live download of her versoin of 'He Thinks He'l Keep Her' from 'Women of Cournty'). '10,000 Miles' & Almost Home' are 2 of the best songs you will ever hear from her. The only essential track missing from this package is 'This Shirt'. Another of her best songs.

One of the best singer/songwriters ever! This is a great album and a must have if you love great songs.

Didn't realize I missed her songs

I forgot how many great songs she has. Haven't heard her in forever. Since radio won't play older songs here we are.

Mary Chapin Carpenter was part of a small movement of folk-influenced country singer/songwriters of the late '80s. Although many of these performers never achieved commercial success, Carpenter was able to channel her anti-Nashville approach into chart success and industry awards by the early '90s. Carpenter was born and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, the daughter of a Life magazine executive; she spent two years of her childhood in Japan, where her father was launching the Asian edition of Life....
