Editors’ Notes

Stéphanie (Soko) Sokolinski is a César-nominated French actress who declared her music career "dead" after one minor hit (2007's "I'll Kill Her") and a tour with electro-hip-hop pop menace M.I.A. Then in 2012, Soko declared herself reborn. This rather bewitching album was released throughout Europe in 2012, finding a U.S. release in 2013. Comparisons to Kimya Dawson, while not completely accurate, are clever (especially the one that imagined Soko was Dawson after a foreign exchange program to France, where she returned with a Jean-Paul Sartre novel and porno mags). Sure, Soko uses childlike minimalism for "No More Home, No More Love," while "For Marlon" might make you wonder if Dawson's mastered a French accent. Yet the arrangements brought forth here by longtime Elliott Smith collaborator Fritz Michaud suggest a potentially sophisticated adult singer/songwriter awaiting her wings ("First Love Never Die"). Soko is really quite good, sounding lost on "Destruction of the Disgusting Ugly Hate" and "Why Don't You Eat Me Now, You Can." If only Serge Gainsbourg were alive to accompany her.

Nice

She has a sweet, intimate voice (with a cute French accent). I like both the lyrics and music.

I can't stop listening.

Seems good

If you like slow soft music with meanings you'll love this :) has potential :)

Soft as the river flows

Soko is a very talented songwriter and singer. I love her soothing tender voice.

In 2007, she scored a hit across Europe with "I'll Kill Her," and following a support slot on M.I.A.'s Kala tour and collaborations with the Go! Team and Cornershop,...
