iTunes Review

Their third full-length release in 18 months, and the follow-up to the fantastic Crimes, Everything Touches Everything signals more than just prolific songwriting and recording — it marks the ascension of a remarkable band. A loose tapestry of roots rock and jangly pop, These United States delivers gritty rock-n-roll (“Night & the Revolution,” “End”), twangy folk (“Will it Ever,” “I’m Gonna Assemble a City”), and moments of melodic beauty (“The Secret Door,” “Good Night Wish”) with style and sincerity. Propelled by sharp guitar licks and particularly good use of pedal steel and piano, the songs twist and turn along with the inspired wordplay and stirring vocals of lead singer Jesse Elliott. Their intriguing lyricism touches on themes of country, identity, fear, and the fine line that sometimes separates desperation and optimism, and they pack in a lot of ideas while keeping the tunes chugging forward. Everything Touches Everything is an accomplished and enjoyable merging of indie rock and the next generation of Americana.

Music for the moment

Everything touches Everything is exuberant, playful, thoughtful, tuneful, lyrical, generous, challenging, familiar and new. TUS pondered the mysteries of life, mixed it with whiskey-love, honored it with their special brand of collective and creative musical inspiration and crafted one of the best folk/rock albums of 2009 - no lie. An exceptional new work by the hardest working band of genuine gentlemen - I dare you to stop spinning this disc.

Rocks best kept secret!

I saw these guys live at the Northcenter Ribfest in Chicago and I'm now hooked for life. I love the southern edge that these guys have. I would never label them as country, but they do produce this very raw and genuine southern twang that really separates them from other bands. I can't wait for their next album.

Combining Devendra Banhart's "new weird American" eccentricity, Flaming Lips-influenced electronic bells and whistles, and a Wilco-esque twanginess, These United States create a musical melting pot that blends together a wide array of influences. Born of a collaboration between Jesse Elliott and David Strackany (the man behind Paleo), These United States put together the songs that would become their debut LP in 2007. The resulting album, A Picture of the Three...
