Great Insight Into Elvis' Songwriting
If you have Elvis Costello's CDs, then you may have some of these songs. It's great to see this iTunes exclusive with some unreleased versions and demos of some of the songs. The most interesting thing about this album however is to hear Elvis explain what influenced each song and how they came about. This album isn't for everyone, but for the Elvis Costello fan, it's a great addition!
I can't think of any composer that is his equal.
The bottom line is this: there's Elvis Costello, and then there's everyone else. His entire catalogue is genius. Well... in the interest of full disclosure, I'll admit that I'm still not much of a fan of "Goodbye Cruel World," but what'er you gonna do? But you have to put Elvis in the same class as Brian Wilson, Lennon & McCartney, and his beloved Burt Backarack. In any case, I'm not sure who this collection benefits most — novices or die-hard fans. If you're a fan who'd likes to hear a good backstory, this is a good pick up. And there are some classics that any curious music fan should own. But the truth is, if you want to get into Elvis? Buy the albums. Buy 'em because they're perfect. You want a great album? Buy "King of America." Buy "Get Happy!!!" Buy "Imperial Bedroom." Buy the ones that interest you. Sure, you can buy this and be pretty happy with it. But buy it with the intent to start the whole nine yards. Then? It'll be the best investment in music you can make.
Great collection of songs you may not know are great, plus interesting tidbits of info in the form of the intros. Cheers to Mr. Costello and iTunes for compiling other than greatest hits and for recording these iTunes Originals versions. I bought this album without feeling like I was duplicating a lot of his songs I already own.
