Pretty Good Stripped Down

Sorry, Charlie. Amy Millan is an excellent artist. Honey From the Tombs was among my top 5 last year. This KCRW session is a peek into her abilities unplugged... While not stellar, there is something nice and comforting about these non-polished versions of her studio work, plus, the Death Cab cover is fun. My only complaint is that the entire session was not released.

Amy Millan sinks a bit lower.

Amy Millan is the female singer for the band Stars. She's also worked with other projects like Broken Social Scene and the rest. What she is remembered for is her amazing and dreamy voice. However, more recently, her music has become more unoriginal. Where as a few years ago, she was doing a cover of a Smiths song making it sound entirely different so you wouldn't even realize it was a cover - something Death Cab for Cutie did a DIRECT, boring cover of - now she's off trying to do pretty clear covers of Death Cab. I mean, it's not terrible, and the covers and renditions of her own songs aren't terrible or anything, but they're just lower quality than I expect from her. She's just better than that. It's impossible to give five stars to someone who seems like they're not giving all they've got. Three stars because I know she can be much more original and much more interesting.

KCRW Sessions are Great

Some of the negative reviewers should probably keep in mind that this recording is a session for KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" program and not a official studio release. These shows are recorded in the morning, a time when musicians are sometimes not at their best. The vibe of the shows are more fun than serious, and artists usually take advantage of the session to relax and do different versions of their songs and covers. Keep all this in mind when listening to any KCRW session. Most are not officialy released, but the Amy Millan session is sufficiently polished for them to do so. I really don't see how any fan of Amy's great voice would be disappointed in any way by any recordings in which we get to hear it.

Canadian chanteuse Amy Millan is best known for fronting the indie rock act Stars. Millan's charming girlish vocals have also appeared on albums from Sixteen Tons, Broken Social Scene, and Jason Collett. In 2006, Millan put things in her own words for her first solo album, Honey from the Tombs. This songbook of romance and reflection took three years to record and features performances by Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, Jimmy Shaw of Metric, the bluegrass band Crazy Strings,...
