The Bloodline Can't Hurt, Of Course

Teddy has the genetic advantage of having Richard and Linda Thompson as parents but he still has to write the songs. He came to our small town in Connecticut with his sister basically in support of his mom's world tour. They were finishing off their tour with this little add-on date, probably as a favor to someone. Everyone there came to hear Linda but when Teddy came to the microphone near the end at the beckoning of his mom, and did one song, the whole place did a collective gasp. Download "I Should Get Up" or "Shine So Bright" if you need a preview. Or for the masterpiece, go to Richard and Teddy Thompson doing "Persuasion" together. Highly recommended, beautifully crafted, intelligent adult pop music.

Forgot this Folker's Folks

Teddy's easily more talented than most second genation popsters, & certainly more pleasant than what you'll hear on the radio; but still, I bought largely for Richard & Linda's presence. Dad's guitar is typically brilliant in a restrained, supportive way (fair enough, it is Teddy's album), but the bonus duet with mom, which is featured on the physical disc is absent here. C'mon iTunes; you're supposed to be offering us more value, not less. Please don't let market dominance turn you into the very arrogant, money-driven types you're supposed to be replacing.

Listen. Just Listen.

Teddy Thompson - Separate Ways Beautiful. If you have a heart beating in your chest and have acquired some life experience, it's hard to imagine that you would not be touched by this extraordinarily talented young man. It's a rarity to find this quality of writing: beautiful melodies and insightful lyrics. The whole collection is very strong, but it is the ballads -- delivered by Teddy's poignant vocals -- that grip you and never let go. The title track "Separate Ways" aches like a wound that won't heal, his voice bleeding vulnerability and bitterness. In "Think Again" he sings of regret, speaking of impulsive actions and decisions we sometimes make in life. Some music you can listen to in the car, while you work, or have on in the background. Not with some of these gems. You wouldn't be reading my review if you weren't capable of appreciating this type of music. So play Separate Ways when there are no distractions and listen. Just listen.
