Customer Reviews

Yeah, baby!

The fact that they use most of the original solos is awesome. There is no trubute like someone else wearing out your solo. These guys know what they're about when in comes to M.F. For someone who grew up on Maynard, this album is a treat to the ears.

Great Tribute

What a wonderful album. I heard the rough cuts, saw them live (in the rain) at Watertown Jazz, and keep this one in my top playlist. Joe Murphy has assembled a great ensemble...ready to wow the crowd at a moment's notice. This should be in everyone's library. Roy Agee's solo in 'I Wish' is something everyone needs to experience...live if possible. Chris Crumley

Great Job (Add-On)

It's really not my intent to nit-pick so please don't take it as such but in the review written by HMS16421 the reviewer notes that: "...the lead trumpet can hit a double C and that's impossible." Not accurate, speaking as a former jazz trumpet player who was born with the ability to play in the upper register all the time. Bud Brisbois (of Stan Kenton Orch. and studio recording work) came up a couple of years before me and Bud could play consistently in the Double High C range, as could I, and many other cats with "freak" lips, personal embouchures combined with certain mouthpieces (I used a Rudy Muck #9 I think it was) with a very narrow bore & a shallow cup). Maynard and I discussed this on a number of occasions. When I auditioned for Westlake College of Modern American Music in Hollywood I ran a scale up to Double C and then kept going to a Triple. Bud played there regularly as any of the remaining studio guys can tell you. Triple Cs were okay for me on a great night but not like Brisbois could. With this group you get plenty of these trumpet fire works here and it's always show stopping. Check out Kenton's recording of "Lonely Woman" (available from iTunes) and hear Bud "go off the piano" with a note too high to identify. A Kenton player (Dalton Smith) told me he thought Buddy had hit a "clam" but Stan liked the way it sounded so left in in. Thank you Stanley! Awesome trumpet work. This album features some fabulous upper register playing as well as terrific section work the true mark of good jazz ensemble playing. But don't overlook the work of Maynard, Bud, Dalton, Conrad Gozzo, and others. Fine album.
