Album Review

Country Gentleman: The Best of Ricky Skaggs is a terrific double-disc set that traces Skaggs' years at Epic Records, which spanned from 1981 to 1991. All of his charting singles are featured on this 32-track collection, including the number one singles "Crying My Heart Out Over You," "I Dont' Care," "Heartbroke," "I Wouldn't Change you If I Could," "Highway 40 Blues," "Uncle Pen" and "Cajun Moon," as well as the Mark O'Connor/New Nashville Cats duet "Restless." Skaggs was one of the few country artists of his era to make albums as good as his singles, but boiling his career down to his singles does him no disservice — in fact, it accentuates the consistant brilliance of his music, not to mention its depth. It's a definitive portrait of one of the most important country musicians of the '80s, capturing him at his peak.

One of the Best

I had the amazing gift of playing in Ricky's band, Kentucky Thunder, from the fall of 1992 to the spring of 1993, and was able to play many of these songs with Rick and an incredible group of musicians on stages from Europe to San Francisco to the Grand Ole Opry. Although country music was not exactly my forte when I joined the band (long story), I came to develop an avid appreciation for the genre through playing amazingly intricate songs like "Country Boy" and "Life's Too Long", and also fell in love with its pure beauty and simplicity while playing "I Wouldn't Change You If I Could" and "You've Got A Lover". Until you get inside this music, you can't digest or understand its' greatest songs' impact on the popular American songbook of the 20th century. Rick, it was a fantastic ride 15 years ago, and made me so much more of a musician today than I could have ever been without that opportunity. I count those months submerged in some of the best country writing ever as important to my developement as a musician as my many years of classical and jazz training. As far as this collection goes, don't hesitate - get it now! From the lyric hilarity and irony of "Heartbroke" to the instrumental virtuosity of "Country Boy" to the wonderful pop sensibility of "Same Ol' Love", there are few country singer/instrumentalist/songwriters, if any, who hold even a birthday candle to Mr. Skaggs. Truly the best!

Genre: Country

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

By the time he was in his mid-thirties, Kentuckian Ricky Skaggs had already produced a career's worth of music. At age seven he appeared on TV with Flatt & Scruggs; at 15 he was a member of legendary Ralph Stanley's bluegrass band (with fellow teenager Keith Whitley). None of his '80s peers, male or female, had better musical credentials than Skaggs. The term "multi-talented" lacks the power to characterize this extraordinary singer and instrumentalist. Not only can he sing and pick with the...
