iTunes Review

Following the brooding Behaviour, Very comes off as an upbeat celebration of honesty. On “A Different Point of View,” a whirlpool of burbling synths surrounds Neil Tennant’s vulnerable vocals. “The Theatre” and “Go West” are kindhearted and bright, offering a hug to every listener as the disco beats create a delirious backdrop. Though there are moments of doubt on “Young Offender,” the album’s central mood is epitomized by “Liberation,” the soundtrack to a million gentle hearts stepping into the light.

Pet Shop Boys strong after 80s success!

I was weary of what their material would sound like after all of their 80s stuff (which totally rules by the way), and I was surprised to see that this album was just as good! They have a different sound, but they know how to do it the right way. The opening and closing tracks are perfect and the stuff in between gels so excellently. Give it a try!

Pet Shop Boys' strongest album

Pet Shops Boys' "Very" is arguably the British duo's best album. Released in 1993 the extremely upbeat and danceable "very" was a marked contrast to the slower, somber sounds of the commercially disappointing "behavior".

"Very" is filled with lots of electronic blips, swirls and tons of melodic pop songs. There is only one ballad on the whole album. Stand out moments include the horn drenched "dreaming of the queen", the frenetic "yesterday when I was mad" and the gorgeous "liberation". The album spawned the huge hit "Go west" - an over the top cover of the village people's track complete with male Russian choir.

I only recently began working my way through the PSB's catalogue, after really only knowing them for West End Girls and Go West.. What a fool I've been! I've been buying up songs from every album now and loving it. This album is no exception, Different Point of View sounds like something from Garbage 2.0, and I mean that in a very good way. (Update: I just realized the album cover shows what appears to be a CD case that looks just like the Garbage 2.0 case. I'm scared now.)

Post-modern ironists cloaked behind a veil of buoyantly melodic and lushly romantic synth pop confections, Pet Shop Boys established themselves among the most commercially and critically successful groups of their era with cheeky, smart, and utterly danceable music. Always remaining one step ahead of their contemporaries, the British duo navigated the constantly shifting landscape of modern dance-pop with rare grace and intelligence, moving easily from disco to house to techno with their own distinctive...
