Editors’ Notes

Behind the childlike surface of Princess Chelsea’s debut album, Lil’ Golden Book, lurks a wicked satirical intelligence that both charms and teases the listener. Classically trained singer/songwriter Chelsea Nikkel (a founding member of New Zealand’s Teen Wolf) carries herself with an innocent air, but her observations about humanity, technology, and the finite nature of existence are anything but naïve. Her sweet vocal tones and music-box melodies suggest an elementary-school pageant where disturbing secrets are revealed to unsuspecting parents. At times, Nikkel’s visions take a fanciful turn, as in “Ice Reign” (a waltz with a morbid twist) and the über-catchy “Monkey Eats Bananas.” More mature in theme are “The Cigarette Duet” (featuring her coproducer Jonathan Bree on vocals) and “Too Fast to Live,” both lyrically blurring the line between loving concern and nagging domination. Nikkel decries fast-paced modern life in “Overseas” and faces up to mortality in “Frack,” all while maintaining her dreamy fairytale persona. This is dark kiddie-pop for grownups: smart, insinuating, and a wee bit sinister.

Very cool..

Love this.

Original

I like her voice and her style. Some of it is cheesy but a good amount of the album is pretty innovative. Not too much of that around anymore so cheers!

Stunning

I'm going to New Zealand
