iTunes Review

Ryan Adams’ second solo album, with its first single, “New York, New York,” was released just as the events of September 11 were unfolding. It gave the opening track an added poignancy and, in some ways, obscured what was a terrifically balanced album of emotional nuance and classic rock riffs. The rockers are fun (“Firecracker’) and tough (“Nobody Girl”), but it’s the ballads that really stand out. “La Cienega Just Smiled” includes a guitar line that lingers lost past song’s end. “When the Stars Go Blue” features Ryan shuttling off into a heavenly falsetto. “Harder Now That It’s Over” works through a chilling wind that comes through as a relationship disappears. “Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd.” keeps Tinseltown in its rearview. Adams would go on from here to record albums at an alarming pace, making it difficult for people to keep score. But the emotional breadth and stylistic diversity present here establish him as someone worth keeping an ear on and as an artist with something to say.

Customer Reviews

I guess Ryan is the new Dylan . . .

Apparently like Dyan, Ryan will write amazing songs (When the Stars Go Blue) and record nuanced and soulful versions of these songs that will not get a lot of airplay. Then, a mainstream entity will record a slick version of that song which will be lapped up by the masses. Representatives of the said masses will then dribble out reviews calling the real artist's singing "nasal" and state that the uninspired, watered-down cover is better. Some people just don't have a clue.

Not for Tim McGraw fans

I know, I know -- you just came here because someone said you should, and you loved Tim McGraw's version of When the Stars Go Blue when you heard it 9,000 times on Hot Country 94.5, so why not check out this guy named Ryan Adams? But you don't like it. You're wondering why this guy butchered Tim's song, aren't you? Look, Tim -- and most other country stars -- butcher a lot of songs. There are rare instances where someone else sings a song better than the person who wrote it (Johnny Cash doing Hurt, for example), but this isn't one of them. Look, there' s a reason you listen to Tim McGraw -- it doesn't make you think. Or, that's whatever was playing on the radio when you picked up the Busch Light to go drinkin' in the cornfield. (yeah, yeah -- I grew up in a small town, too. don't tell me you don't do it) *end sarcasm* -- Oh, and it would be really cool if iTunes could get the extra five tracks on here. The first pressing of Gold came with an extra CD called Side 4. Great stuff on there.

Born: November 5, 1974 in Jacksonville, NC

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Mixing the heartfelt angst of a singer/songwriter with the cocky brashness of a garage rocker, Ryan Adams is at once one of the few artists to emerge from the alt-country scene to achieve mainstream commercial success and the one who most strongly refused to be defined by the genre, leaping from one spot to another stylistically while following his increasingly prolific muse. Adams was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina in 1974. While country music was a major part of his family's musical diet...
