Hot Cakes

Hot Cakes

While the first time around The Darkness were considered a parody of 1970s and 1980s hard rock with their brilliantly catchy single, "I Believe In A Thing Called Love," they have now reformed with their original line-up for album number three and sound less like a satire on hard rock tropes than a band that simply loves shameless pop hooks and the firepower of serious amplification. "Everybody Have A Good Time" aims for the arena where Poison once dominated, but the grand shuffle of "Every Inch of You" is taken to a pleasurable extreme with the sweet wailings of singer Justin Hawkins. "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us" speeds up and down the hard rock highway, but it also catches a genuine up-to-date modern power. "Living Each Day Blind" resembles a classic power ballad, except it leans heavier on the power and strips back the gloss usually associated with the 'ballad' part. Acoustic demos, including the striking "I Can't Believe It's Not Love," videos and song by song commentary complete the experience.
