iTunes Editors’ Notes

Released in 1977 as a three-record set, Decade summed up Neil Young's career to that point with the same idiosyncratic approach he applied to his music. That plenty of first-rate material was left off is a testament to the man's greatness (and a signal to fans to keep buying the individual albums). It's intriguing to see what Young picks. "Heart of Gold" and "Ohio" are the surefire hits; however, "Sugar Mountain," "Down by the River," "Southern Man," "The Needle and the Damage Done," and "Like a Hurricane" all became FM radio staples. Young rescues a few classic tracks from potential obscurity, bringing his collaboration with Stephen Stills, "Long May You Run," to prominence. "Campaigner" is his olive branch to Richard Nixon. The wired intensity of "Burned" and "Cortez the Killer" meets the twisted balladry of "After the Gold Rush" and "Star of Bethlehem." His orchestrated work with Jack Nitzsche on "Broken Arrow," as a member of Buffalo Springfield, juxtaposes nicely with the country-rock jaunt of "Burned" and the raging fury of "Mr. Soul." There isn't a bum track here, and there are more than a few revelations.

FIVE Decades!

He's been coined "The Godfather of Grundge"... But what about NY's other music that has been at the very heart of America's youth coming of age... for the past FIVE DECADES? If you don't have the patience or the intellect to be open-minded to other musical styles, don't bother with this album. If you do, let me introduce you to the core of the man who should be known as "The Trunk" of R&R's ancestral tree. All that has been, and will be, good about R&R has either been influenced, touched by, or affirmed by NY and his decendents. He has always bled R&R; no doubt about it. But this album takes you much deeper into R&R's landscape - into the influences in the myriad of current popular music stylings (with a few exceptions... Brittany and Taylor!). There's Folk - GOOD folk; solid Country - NO... not the whiney type!; as well as the cerebral version of 60's Radical. But the stuff I love is that which led him to his 80's music that gave birth to the Grunge of the 90's --- Mr. Soul... Cinnamon Girl... Southern Man... Like a Hurricane... Cortez the Killer... and my personal favorite - Cowgirl in the Sand. With a firm understanding that every (good) R&R cut encompasses bits and pieces of all that is good about American music over the past 5 decades, you will also begin to understand and appreciate the unique and non-conforming lyrical and melodic style of NY, who - interestingly enough - is Canadien! But don't stop with 'Decade'... You need to follow him on the rest of his musical journey - leading the fight against commercialism, the critics, and the wannabees we've had to suffer over the last 40+ years. NY is an integral part of R&R's foundation - having done his best over these 5 decades to keep the R&R basement from leaking.

AMAZING and about .46 cents a song

An amazing compilation that doesn't feel like a compilation. At $15.99, 35 songs, you're paying almost .46 cents a song to get some of Neil Young's finest works. Many of his greatest hits are here... Old Man, Heart of Gold, Southern Man... but you also get many others just as amazing. Decade is a perfect retrospect for early, classic Young, including songs from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and Buffalo Springfield. Unless you are a Neil Young fanatic, you may not appreciate every song on every album from his 1st 10 years. No worries, Decade picks the out the best of them.

remembering the LPs

I remember playing my sister's Decade album.......the needle dropping on the LP and the crackle between tracks.....this added that extra element to how one should hear Neil Young the first I scan the song list on iTunes, I see myself 30 years ago with the album in my hands.....I think the iTunes Decade album will be a purchase.

After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s through...
