Album Review

Pink Martini's debut album incorporates an impressive variety of influences. Traces of Cuban music, cabaret, and film soundtracks are all discernible on Sympathique, an intriguing blend of contemporary pop painted with brass, strings, and percussion.

Wow. Tasteful and beautifully performed Latin-world-fusion-lounge-jazz. Uncategorizable and impressively multilingual. Check it out! Bring it with you on a trip around the world! Unfortunately, only a partial album is available here. Perhaps down the road iTunes will also have Pink Martini's fabulous subsequent release, Hang On Little Tomato.

Let's Dance, or not

This is a great compilation crossing the boundaries of classification. It mixes salsa, jazz, rock, classical, virtually all genres of music. It is mixes like this that keep the music world exciting creating a CD that can be listened to in order to relax in the comfort of one's home or danced to on a night on the tow. Rarely do you get a combination of talent as you do here and it is off the wall mixes like these that keep jaded old farts like me excited about the music world

Excellent (though missing Bolero)

Though I think Hang on Little Tomato is a superior album, Sympathique was a great debut. I love most of the songs, with Que Sera Sera and Song of the Black Lizard just not doing anything for me. But the rest more than make up for those 2. It's too bad Bolero isn't included in the collection, as that is a great performance. Definitely get Amado Mio, No Hay Problema, Sympathique, Donde Estas, Yolanda, and Brazil. If you get the chance, go see Pink Martini live. They do not disappoint.

The eclectic, acoustic-oriented sounds of Pink Martini have never been easy to categorize, but that hasn't prevented the Portland, Oregon-based band from acquiring a loyal, enthusiastic cult following. Some reviewers have considered Pink Martini to be a product of the neo-swing trend of the 1990s and have compared them to bands like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies; however, Pink Martini have a much broader range of influences. And while most of the neo-swing...
