Album Review

Though Cheap Trick's second album, In Color, draws from the same stockpile of Midwestern barroom favorites as their debut album, it was produced by Tom Werman, who had the band strip away their raw attack and replace it with a shiny, radio-ready sound. Consequently, In Color doesn't have the visceral attack of its predecessor, but it still has the same sensibility and a similar set of spectacular songs. From the druggy psychedelia of "Downed" and the bubblegum singalong "I Want You to Want Me" to the "California Girls" homage of "Southern Girls," the album has the same encyclopedic knowledge of rock & roll, as well as the good sense to subvert it with a perverse sense of humor. Portions of the album haven't dated well, simply due to the glossy production, but the songs and music on In Color are as splendid as the band's debut.

Prime Cheap Trick

In Color and Heaven Tonight represent the apex of Cheap Trick's catalogue. In Color rolls relentlesly from beginning to end without letting up. The chopped Harleys on the cover (their coolest in my opinion) are totally appropriate to the breakneck pace. While nothing will dissapoint, Downed, Clock Strikes Ten, and Hello There stand out as some of the most uncompromising and straight ahead rock & roll from the decade.

I Don't Want To Want This

When I was a kid, my parents bought the song "I Want You to Want Me" and I thought it was the coolest song on the planet because it was live and it was great!!! Many years later, I was working at Ames Dept.Store and noticed we had a bunch of cassette tapes marked down in price and one of them was "In Color"! So I bought it not knowing that this was a studio project and this version of "I Want.." sounds so plain but very original. I laugh everytime I hear it cause this is thee original recording and it has its own sound.

Biography

Formed: 1975 in Rockford, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Combining a love for British guitar pop songcraft with crunching power chords and a flair for the absurd, Cheap Trick provided the necessary links between '60s pop, heavy metal, and punk. Led by guitarist Rick Nielsen, the band's early albums were filled with highly melodic, well-written songs that drew equally from the crafted pop of the Beatles, the sonic assault of the Who, and the tongue-in-cheek musical eclecticism and humor of the Move. Their sound provided a blueprint for both power pop and...
