Album Review

When Neil Finn closed the doors on Crowded House, all signs seemed to point to a more experimental direction for future solo releases; even the title of his first solo album, Try Whistling This, implies a reaction against his reputation for well-crafted, highly melodic songs. However, from the opening track, the light and breezy "Last One Standing," Finn puts all fears to rest. Try Whistling This does dabble in experimentation — most notably in the feedback and distorted vocals of the paranoid "Twisty Bass" and the mild trip-hop groove of "Sinner" — but throughout, he shows restraint, tastefully incorporating more exotic effects while staying true to his high melodic standard and meticulous songcraft. Finn seems clearly freed from the restraints of being in a band, allowing him to try a lot of different ideas, from the sweeping "Souvenir" to the instant pop classic of "She Will Have Her Way," to more delicate atmospheric pieces like the title track, ultimately creating his most complex and diverse set to date. And though many of the songs take time to reveal their treasures, it's worth the effort. Try Whistling This features some of Finn's best work yet, and in a nearly flawless catalog like his, that's quite impressive.

Another fantastic album from a fantastic singer/songwriter

I am a huge Crowded House/Neil Finn fan and this album does not disappoint. The complexity of some of the tracks require several listens before they become long-lasting favorites as they inevitably do, but start with "She Will Have Her Way" and "Last One Standing" as easy introductions. This album will enter heavy rotation for those who appreciate well-crafted songs.

Didn't get it at first

It took several listens to this album before I grew to truly love it, but now it's one of my favorites. I agree that She Will Have Her Way is probably the most accessible, and probably the song that drew me in. Then the songs began to unfold one by one and reveal themselves as the amazingly crafted pieces they are. I can't even pick a favorite, they're all amazing - depending on my mood, different songs stand out each time I listen. Well worth the price if you have the attention span to give it the chance it deserves. Unfortunately not everyone will.

This album contains the greatest song ever written

Neil Finn is a master lyricist and this is one of my favorite albums. The obvious choice for a great song is "She Will Have Her Way." If you go a little further you will find a tremendous song in "Faster Than Light." Without a doubt, the best song ever written is "Try Whistling This"--close your eyes and listen to the lyrics and the way the song builds at the end. Neil is the man!
