Album Review

Organist Richard "Groove" Holmes hit upon a successful formula on this Prestige session (reissued on CD in the OJC series), mixing together boogaloo rhythms with emotional solos. His double-time version of "Misty" became a big hit, and the other selections, including Horace Silver's "Song for My Father" and a pair of soulful originals, are in a similar vein. The lone ballad of the set ("The Things We Did Last Summer") is a fine change of pace. With the assistance of guitarist Gene Edwards and drummer Jimmie Smith, Groove Holmes shows that it is possible to create music that is both worthwhile and commercially successful.

Another Excellent Soulful "Groove" Holmes Album

From the opening note of "Soul Message" you are instantly transported to another time when the Hammond B3 ruled the soul/funk/jazz world. The late Richard "Groove" Holmes takes a beautiful combination of standards like "Misty" and "Song for my Father" along with generous helpings of the originals "Groove's Groove" and "Soul Message" for another outstanding offering from this monster B3 artist. Groove is set apart from his contemporaries by his use of the patented "greasy" tone, rather than the percussive staccato of most jazz organists. Jazz enthusiasts will appreciate the beautiful renditions of the standards, and Hammond enthusiats will enjoy the soulful goodness that is Groove's choice of drawbar placement and Leslie control. A must own for any Hammond lover. If you enjoy this album, I would also suggest "Groovin' with Groove" by Groove Holmes and "Giants of the Organ Come Together", a Groove Holmes/Jimmy McGriff duet album.

Well I've never heard of this guy, being 36 yrs old and a rock guy. Somebody must have taking the trash to my apartments dump and couldn't part with it, so they left it on the railing for who ever wanted it. Well I picked it up and man, I gotta say it is super cool jazz!! It is what it says it is soulful!! Well I'm going put it on my mp3 list and leave it somewhere for someone else to pass it on!!!

Revered in soul-jazz circles, Richard "Groove" Holmes was an unapologetically swinging Jimmy Smith admirer who could effortlessly move from the grittiest of blues to the most sentimental of ballads. Holmes, a very accessible, straightforward and warm player who was especially popular in the black community, had been well respected on the Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey circuit by the time he signed with Pacific Jazz in the early '60s and started receiving national attention by recording with such...
