Melbourne-born Tina Arena had established herself as a star in Australia with her childhood stint on Young Talent Time and hit singles like “Sorrento Moon (I Remember),” but 1997's In Deep proved to the rest of the world that she was a pop belter to be reckoned with. Arena cowrote the bulk of In Deep's midtempo vocal showcases, including the spunky “Flashback” and the sumptuous opener “Burn,” and she recorded most of the album live to tape in order to fully capture her kinetic personality on record. In Deep was produced by David Tyson, who’d worked with Arena on 1994’s Don't Ask, and Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones, who helped her lean into the hymn-like qualities of his band's 1984 power-ballad smash “I Want to Know What Love Is.” The album was a massive hit, debuting atop the ARIA charts. It also set up Arena's higher international profile with reissues that included other tracks, including her dramatic duet with the then-ascendant Marc Anthony, “I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You,” and the Diane Warren-penned love metaphor “If I Was A River,” as well as a few French-language songs that hit big in Europe and would serve as a prelude to the francophone albums she began releasing in the 21st century.
