iTunes Review

The surprise buzz band out of L.A. in 2004, Rilo Kiley skirt many styles as singer Jenny Lewis does her Petula "Downtown" Clark best to sound as if she's the coolest chick in the room. Releases on credible indie labels (Barsuk, Saddle Creek) grew the band's reputation. However, with major label distribution and their music's sheer will, they're poised for a major breakthrough. "It's a Hit" features a seven-letter expletive guaranteed to keep it off radio, but the rest of the album's hooks are never so defiant. Blake Sennett's guitar chugs behind, as Lewis sets up center stage with convincing pop ("Accidental Death"), unflinching looks at reality ("Absence of God," "Love and War (11/11/46)") and even a soul number ("I Never"). This isn't a band looking to find one spot on the musical map and settle. With strings and synths augmenting the quartet, this is a group in search of possibilities.

Customer Reviews

There is just something about female rock vocalists that just entices my ear drums.

Overall this album is excellent. If you like folky indie rock at all Rilo Kiley has something for you. The guitar and vocal talent really stands out and is not too over produced. You can't ask for too much more. I personaly love that some of the lyrics are political and I wish more artists embraced political expression. The vocal harmonies are in some ways similar to Iron & Wine (even though male). So if you saw Nickelback and Ludacris on the most popular list and were going to spend some of that gift card money on them first STOP!..think and buy this album (or anything else) instead

Indie Rock and Roll

I first heard Rilo Kiley as the warm up act for Coldplay two years ago, and ever since I have been hooked. This new album is an exlporation of the the bands musical diversity. In it they can do a classic indie rock song like "Portions For Foxes," that is full of energy and sound. But also something more country and acoustic like "More Adventurous." I am so glad that this group is finally getting some attention, a must buy for and indie fan!

One of the best bands around

Rilo Kiley is one of the best bands around right now. This album, though most fans will like "executions" more, shows even more growth in this amazingly talented band. The tracks jump around a bit, stylistically, but rilo kiley still show themselves on each track. A must have.

Formed: 1998 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Like their West Coast contemporaries in Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley steadily gained traction in indie pop circles throughout the late '90s and early 2000s before the record industry (and public at large) officially took note. Led by former child actors Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Blake Sennett (guitar, vocals), the L.A.-based quartet held its first practice in 1998. Bassist Pierre de Reeder and drummer Dave Brock (later replaced by ex-Foundation Lassie member Jason Boesel) completed...
