Editors’ Notes

As anyone who's read Mike Doughty’s brutally funny and cruel memoir The Book of Drugs can attest, he didn’t enjoy too many of his days in Soul Coughing. Getting his songwriting back to the point where he could love the songs again was only achieved by stripping things back to his voice and acoustic guitar and incessantly touring until he felt he'd purged (enough of) his demons. This set combines Doughty's first solo album, Skittish, and his later Rockity Roll EP, with outtakes and “Get Along” from the EvenHand soundtrack added as bonus tracks. Skittish, produced by Kramer (the reverb king who worked with Low and Bongwater and ran Shimmy Disc Records), featured his touches on a few songs. But many of the performances were left alone, including Doughty’s medley of Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” and The Feelies’ “It’s Only Life.” The album remains a highlight. When combined with Rockity Roll tracks like “27 Jennifers” and “Cash Cow” (which feature Doughty programming on a Roland Groovebox), this collection gives a broad view of his early solo work.
